Abstract

This article aimed to reflect on the discussions that, historically, have been developed in the area of sport and leisure through public policies with indigenous peoples. A bibliographical research was carried out in the databases Portal de Periódicos da Capes, in the Brazilian Digital Library of Thesis and Dissertations (BDTD) and in the Vitor Marinho Repository in order to analyze the production on the subject. According to the results, contact with Western society provided significant changes in the cosmological and mythical bases that make up the organization of the social life of indigenous peoples. Thus, dealing with sports in indigenous societies should take into account the historical and cultural elements of this phenomenon.
