Abstract

This is a review of the book “Self-Defense: A Philosophy of Violence”, by Elsa Dorlin, published by Crocodilo Edições and Ubu Editora. The book consists of a prologue and eight more chapters and the Brazilian edition has a preface by Judith Butler. The author assumes a position of strong resistance to different forms of oppression, such as racism, sexism, homosexuality, etc., understanding that the use of violence as opposed to the violence imposed on these groups is legitimate. Self-defense, thus, would make it possible to restore the condition of existence or citizenship, to rehumanize oneself in the face of an oppressive regime.
