The aim of this research work is to analyze the occurrence of counter attacks in high performance football matches. 28 Brazilian National League matches which were broadcast on TV were recorded in VHS tapes and used for observation. Descriptive and percentual analyses were chosen to conduct results analysis. Of a total 521 counter attacks, 78% were made individually, either preceded by a pass interception or a tackle; 28,22% were assisted either by a fellow fielder, or by the goalkeeper. Results show that counter attacks occur both individually and collectively, they are caused by defensive actions and both the fi elders and the goalkeeper participate in it. This research work suggests that counter attack practice should be done from a variety of formations that stimulate defensive actions and encourage goalkeeper participation.
