Abstract

The digitalization process of geographic space, the increasing use of the technical-scientific-informational environment, is demonstrated by the radical transformation of daily activities through the mediation of techniques of the digital age, such as the use of apps for transportation services. This digital layer, however, is integrated with socio-historical processes manifested in the geographic space, as we analyzed in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro State. The launch of Uber in the city, offering transportation services via apps, worsened the already precarious situation of urban mobility, bringing together intense inequalities in the urban space characterized by residential segregation and the peripheralization of the low-income population. This new service has led to already existing urban problems, reproducing socio-spatial inequalities and contributing to the precarization of work.
