Abstract

This study discusses how communities living in a peripheral urban territory experience the challenges of accessing public policies and rights in places marked by environmental racism and inequality. The focus of the analysis is the community of Braúnas in the municipality of Ribeirão das Neves, in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. For many years the community has faced socio-environmental problems caused by a textile factory that dumps waste in a stream that crosses the territory. This is a critical and social ethnography supported by the theory of environmental racism, adopting a descriptive and qualitative approach. The research points out a lack of government attention in a territory marked by structural and conjunctural problems, which are revealed in people’s complaints.
