Abstract

This work aims at elucidating the discussions on the use of biotechnology in the Cerrado´s biodiversity, which can be conceived as both a biome and an element for cultural embodiment. The raised assumptions are backed by recent investigations which point to the emergence of a range of seed species produced by biotechnology due to the need to intensify the production by two types of implementation. The first one, it is the creation of opportunities which make the Cerrado areas conducive to agriculture through the improvement of seed vis-à-vis certain soil conditions. The second one is conditioned by the improvement of seeds which makes the production capacity above the average. These two contributions of biotechnology enhance the productive sector, but, on the other hand, they cannot be environmentally regarded as an avenue for sustainable development because the species created by biotechnology hazardously pose a level of threat to Cerrado´s native species.
