Teatro do Pequeno Gesto: The Last Tango in Nelson Rodrigues’ Rio de Janeiro
Abstract
The playwright Nelson Rodrigues is considered as the main responsible for beginning the modernization process of the Brazilian Theatre. Among the plays he wrote is A Serpente (The Serpent), directed by Antonio Guedes with his Rio de Janeiro company Teatro do Pequeno Gesto. The article proposes to demonstrate that the staging faithfully illustrates Rodrigues’ text by means of a Grotowskian poor-theatre production, which includes minimalist stagecraft, simple costumes, a style of movement that belongs as much to dance as to marking places, and lighting that changes according to the number of characters on stage, emotional states, and style of movement. The production offers a combination of choreography, music, poor-theatre techniques, and most important, Nelson Rodrigues’ minimalist play that tells the story of the poisonous serpent of love, betrayal, the lethal power of sex, and Paradise lost.
