This article presents a discussion about the situation of state education in Goiás regarding the process of grade progression in the public school system. To this end, we analyzed the bibliography relevant to the topic, as well as the provisions of educational laws and the experiences witnessed and lived by teachers. Based on the assumption that each student should be included in the grade (or stage) most compatible with their academic knowledge, and that failure to observe this requirement can lead to serious problems in school education, we will discuss throughout the text the way in which public schools in Goiás are managing the process of grade progression, their approximation to an automatic approval model, the negative and harmful consequences of this process, and the possible political and pedagogical paths to solve this situation.
