Quentin Skinner e a história das ideias políticas

Resumo

O objetivo deste artigo é fazer um balanço crítico da proposta metodológica de Quentin Skinner, com base no contexto linguístico, para a interpretação de escritos políticos do passado. Num primeiro momento, são apresentadas as justificativas e características da metodologia proposta, cuja principal diretriz é reconstituir o contexto discursivo no qual o texto se inscreve, as convenções linguísticas que regem o tratamento dos temas abordados e a intenção de seu autor ao escrevê-lo. Em seguida, são analisadas as principais objeções ao contextualismo linguístico de Skinner e as respostas dadas aos seus críticos. Por fim, é discutida a relevância da metodologia proposta para a compreensão das ideias políticas de autores do passado.
