A study of the bimanual signals of the brazilian sign language in the "backs of the hand" sublocation

The objective of this paper is to analyze how the signs of the Brazilian Sign Language
(Libras) produced with both hands are presented, in which the active hand configures the sign
and the passive hand serves as a support for the configured sign, in what refers to the
subspace “back of the hand”, the location “support hand”, utilized by the deaf signalers from
Sergipe. This study’s methodology was: bibliographic research, utilizing the linguistic studies
of Quadros, Karnopp, Felipe and Ferreira-Brito; the field research, via the direct observation
of the signaling of the participants and video-record of the variants that happen in the form
that the subspace “back of the hand” is presented, the location of the support hand, the
production of signs, identifying if the frequency is greater om the shape with an open or
closed hand. According to the results of this research, the variations that occur in the shape of
the hand of the subspace “back of the hand” when a sign is articulated on it, can be characterized as an allophone, once these variations do not alter the meaning or the
signification of the signs.
