In this paper, we tried to make a dialogue with some of the important studies on the linguistic phenomenon called code-blending, a characteristic phenomenon of bimodal bilingualism. Bimodal bilingual speakers may sign a sign language and speak an oral language, both alternately and simultaneously, which is not provided to unimodal speakers. The aim of the work is to encourage and provide to further researches a direction to new investigations about a phenomenon still little explored in the literature. Thus, we performed a brief literature review, with greater emphasis on some of the important publications from the last two decades, a period when the subject started to call attention when observed under different approaches, highlighting it as a relevant theme for several research fields. A greater focus is placed on the discussions about the characterization of code-blending as a distinct and at the same time relatable phenomenon to code-switching.
Keywords: bimodal bilingualism, code-blending, code-switching.
