The festival of signed folklore “Os Craques de Libras” [the Brazilian Sign Language Superstars] was the result of a partnership between the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) and the Greater Florianópolis Deaf Association, supported by the UFSC Department of Culture (SECULT). This event showed that there are people in the Deaf community highly skilled in the creation and performance of signed stories, poetry and jokes. Such festivals, which have been held in Brazil and other countries, provide an opportunity to bring together the deaf community, strengthen deaf identity, develop sign language and transmit folkloric practices to newer members of the community. As an experiment that recognizes the collaborative nature of deaf folklore, this article was written as a collaborative exercise among deaf and hearing researchers, including undergraduates, master’s and doctoral students and professors.
