History of space and the space of history:

the role of history in architectural design and teaching

Abstract

Integrating the content of architecture history classes with design practice has been a major challenge to architecture courses and, usually, it has not been a subject of discussion. In the daily practice of the courses, the topics of history and design remain comfortably confined and disciplined in their premises, disconnected from each other, separating historical reflection from the design process. A few questions arise as goals to be pursued by this article: Why should an architect study history? How can he use this theoretical knowledge in his practical work? What attitude should be expected from a designer towards history? This text explores a proposal of integration between the disciplinary fields of history and architectural design, using as methodology an epistemological reflection on the meaning and historicity of the concept of history, and its application in the design process. Furthermore, we analyze student design exercises aiming to dialogue with history. This experience shows that linking teaching and research can build new perspectives on classical architectural themes and points the way for further study. Seeking the integration of these disciplines also demonstrates possibilities of innovation for architectural knowledge and production. A rare reflection in the architectural field that systematically and thoughtlessly repeats models constructed for different historical contexts.
