The aim of this discussion is to understand the metaphysical nature of the concept volonté générale in the philosophy of J.-J. Rousseau's philosophy. Investigating the nature of this idea, so dear to the political thought of the Genevan, means understanding the very essence of his political theory, since the general will is the heart of his système. To this end, based on research into the works of the Swiss thinker, we will divide this study into three parts: in the first, we will answer the question: ‘what is Rousseau's metaphysics?’; in the second, we will investigate the influence of Malebranche's volonté générale on his philosophy; and finally, we will highlight the difference between the Rousseauan general will and that formulated by the author of Concerning the search after truth.
Keywords: Metaphysical nature. General will. Malebranche. J.-J. Rousseau.
