This article seeks to present a brief outline of the elements that underpin the development of the notion of engagement in the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre. In Sartre’s philosophical trajectory, engagement became prominent from 1945 onward, in the aftermath of the Second World War, when the theme assumed a privileged position in the editorial line of the journal Les Temps Modernes and in his theoretical writings on the social function of literature, as exemplified in his 1948 book What Is Literature? The article examines how the idea of engagement had already begun to take shape in Sartre’s work, albeit in an embryonic state. More specifically, it is linked to the redefinition of terms concerning the understanding of the human condition, especially the idea of freedom and its implications in the realm of action, which, in turn, requires the study of consciousness in its relation to the world and, in particular, to the present moment.
