Abstract

Bergson always wanted to separate science and philosophy, emphasizing that each follows a radically different method. Bachelard, criticizing the fundamental concepts of Bergson's philosophy, sees in this separation a very serious danger both for science and for philosophy. According to him, the weaknesses of Bergsonism must be shown in order to prevent philosophy from having the last word on what is reality and time (i. e. science). We will therefore see, word by word, how the two philosophers deal with time, duration, multiplicity, continuity and discontinuity. We will thus end up with a sort of dialogue of the deaf, analogous to that which took place between Bergson and Einstein in 1922.
