Abstract: Besides the traditionally posited five external senses, Thomas Aquinas identifies as sensible potencies various internal senses. Among internal senses, common sense is particularly appealing, for its operation seems to be indissociable from sensing generally considered. Common sense's’typical operations are to perceive that one senses and to discriminate between sense objects belonging to different external senses. Owing to these two functions, it is a source of sensible consciousness and unifies information aroused by irreducibly distinct external senses. In this paper, the positing of common sense as an special sensible power different from external senses will be justified and it will be explained why the latter are dependent on the former.
Key-words: Thomas Aquinas; sensation; common sense; consciousness.
