Abstract

A fundamental thesis for the Christian tradition is that everything that happens in the world happens under the providence of God. Thus, even the suffering of human beings must also be understood under the light of the notion of providence, and the suffering of a just person like Job or of a whole human community like the slaves in colonial Brazil seems particularly perplexing. One recent interpretation stresses the therapeutic function of adversities. A careful reading of some texts by Thomas Aquinas and Antônio Vieira points otherwise. These authors insist rather on the human limitations in fully understanding divine providence as well as on the necessity of having faith in the providence of God.
