Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of Philoponus’ In Physica II, 1, l. 11-14, text in which the author exposes his understanding of the notion of force as formative and directive of the totality of the bodies insofar as it sustain their being, conferring, hence, unity and order to the cosmos. In this context, it is possible to defend that the force linked to the natural locomotion of the simple bodies taken together, i.e., the cosmos, is an anima mundi. For this purpose, the notion of life, also present in the In Physica II, 1, l. 11-14, is taken as key to interpret, once that it makes sense for it to affirm that the cosmos has a form, which is itself the soul of the cosmos.
