This text intends to analyse a passage of Plato’s Republic III on kinds of poetry and elocution. Some variation in use of vocabulary relationed with idea of imitation (mimesis) is observed. This fact seems to introduce problems to understand the meaning and aims of the doctrine. I try to propose a way of explaining and solving that semantic variation, basing analysis on theses the dialogue has just established.
