Abstract

This paper describes some of the key mechanisms used by Aquinas to deal with the divine attributes. Arising from the multiplicity and complexity of these attributes a number of problems which, in our view, are understood by Aquinas as likely to be settled only through a correct choice of the most appropriate philosophical instrument for each case. Univocal cause and equivocal cause, res significata and modus significandi, analogy, negative way and way of eminence, similarity, axiom of nowhere, among others, are presented in a sequence that we consider easier to understand. Finally, our purpose is mainly to introduce the reader to Aquinas’s modus of proceeding about this topic.
