Abstract

A serological study of Babesia caballi was performed in 512 serum samples of equines in the micro-region of Goiânia. The prevalence of antibodies anti-Babesia caballi determined by the immunofluorescent antibody test was 90.8%, i.e. 465 out of 512 serum were positive. All serum were tested in dilutions ranging from 1:40 to 1:2560. The most frequent titer was 1:320. No statistically significant differences were observed among age groups, breeds, species and sex. Based on these results the region was characterized as a highly enzootic area for B. caballi. The economic importance of the disease in the region was considered to be related to the potential risk that it shows for susceptible animals imported from free areas.
