Abstract

Seven sugarcane varieties were tested for feeding choice by termites Cornitermes cumnulans and C. snyderi. Eight colonies of each species were kept in 20 1 plastic containers under laboratory environment conditions. The containers were connected by a hose to a multiple choice area, where stem pieces of each variety were offered. The experiment was carried out in two stages. At first, cultivars RB72-454, SP71-799, SP71-6163, RB76-5418, SP71-1406 and SP79-1011 were offered. In a second stage, cultivars RB72-454, SP71-799, SP71-6163, RB76-5418, SP71-1406 and NA56-79 were used. The percentage of attack on stem pieces was evaluated using a grade scale from 0 to 5. All cultivars were attacked, however, cultivar RB72-454 was the least preferred by the two termite species.
