URUARÁ (PARÁ, TRANSAMAZON REGION, BRAZIL) DEVELOPMENT-RESEARCH
Keywords:
Family agriculture, Transamazon region, production systemAbstract
A strong tendency to cattle growing is being observed in family agriculture in Uruará, PA (Transamazon region, Brazil), and its effect on agroecosystem is unknown. Research in this region is still monodisciplinar, restricted to experiment station and not related to growers problems. EMBRAPA-CPATU/UFPa/CIRAD-EMVT are studying production system as a whole, identifying limits and trying to solve problems, involving local partners. In less than two years this research reached promising results. At first, a production system profile was done, emphasizing cattle component, defining priorities for technology spread on pasture, toxic herbs and mineral supply; mineral mix formulation and processing basement by growers organizations; promising pasture germplasm testing (gramineae and leguminosae); and cattle performance evaluation. New subjects as the raising of swine, birds and wild animals should be included. Institutional adjusting must be done to improve this project, which is priority for EMBRAPA-CPATU.
