Abstract

In research on carrot production, in Brazil, the plants of the outermost rows of the beds are usually excluded from yield measurement as border plants. In commercial carrot production, however, forty to fifty percent of all plants belong to the border rows. It doesn’t seem reasonable to exclude such an amount of plants from yield measurement. On this subject three trials were layed out in Goiás State, Brazil, from 1995 to 1998, one in a commercial carrot field and two at the College of Agriculture of the Federal University of Goiás, Goiânia. Border rows of the bed were compared to inside rows, concerning root yield. There wasn’t found any significant difference in yield of roots between border rows and inside rows of the bed. Therefore it seems unecessary to exclude border rows of carrot beds for experimental purposes.
