SYSTEMS OF SOIL PREPARATION EFFECT ON DENSITY AND MACROPOROSITY OF SOIL
Keywords:

The study was conducted at the Embrapa Arroz e Feijão, Goiânia-Goiás, Brazil, in a clayey dark red latosol, for four consecutive years (1992-1996). During this period eight soil preparation operations were conducted. The objective of the study was to evaluate the effect of systems of soil preparation on density and macroporosity of soil. The experiment was conducted in a completely randomized design with split plots. Soil preparation systems were: moldboard plough/harrow disc; moldboard plough; harrow disc and no-tillage. Soil was prepared by moldboard plough at 30 cm depth and by harrow disc at 15 cm depth. Soil density was determined by cylinder volume method and macroporosity by table tension method. Harrow disc reduced soil density in the upper layer (0-10 cm) and moldboard plough in the deeper layer (10-20, 20-30 cm). No-tillage increased soil density in the upper layer, whereas macroporosity reduced with increasing soil density.
KEY-WORDS: Harrow disc; no-tillage; moldboard plough; physical characteristics of soil.
