Abstract

This study was developed in order to 1) identify the number of establishments and companies in dairy business which were under federal inspection and working in the State of Goiás; 2) discover the distribution according to the capacity of the installation of the establishment and dairies within the counties and micro-regions; 3) identify the main products of the dairies during the years 1991 and 1992. The results showed that: a) up until June 1993 there were 89 dairies functioning under federal inspection which were the owners of 229 establishments producing milk and dairy products, where 86 were processing plants and 120 were refrigeration posts; b) the 7 largest companies were owners of 53.3% of all establishments and controlled 61.6% of all installed capacity; In the Meia-ponte micro-region, the main milk producer in the state, had the largest number of establishments and dairies; d) the big companies were located around the state following a regional preference, with most of the 5 largest companies (by groups of micro-regions) limiting themselves almost exclusively to one micro-region; e) the main products were powdered milk and cheese which represented respectively 40.6% and 33.0% of the type C raw milk received by dairies in 1992.
