THE VALUE INDEX AND THE NITROGEN BALANCE OF Brachiaria decumbens AND Brachiaria ruziziensis AT DIFFERENT GROWTH STAGES
Abstract
This work was conducted at the Department of Animal Science, Escola Superior de Agricultura de Lavras, Lavras, Minas Gerais, from July, 1980, to October, 1981. It was designed to compare the nutritive value index and the nitrogen balance of their hays at three different growth stages (60, 90 and 120 days). The nutritive value index and nitrogen balance was determined using 12 (twelve) sheep in metabolic cages. The experiment was divided into three parts. Each part was statistically analyzed on a 3 x 2 factorial scheme with two repetitions within a completely random experimental design. At the end, the collected data were statistically analyzed as a single experiment. Results permitted the following conclusion: the age more indicated for production of hay was between 60 to 90 days of growth in both species analyzed.
