GERMINATION OF SEEDS OF Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu UNDER DIFFERENT STORAGE PERIODS AND HORMONAL TREATMENT

The aim of this work was to study the effects of seeds coat, storage period and hormonal treatment on seed germination. The seeds of Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu were stored for four, five and sixteen months post harvesting and the study was carried out using intact and denuded seeds. The seeds were denuded by manual removal of its coats. The seed viability, its moisture level and water uptake were also tested. For germination experiments the seeds was treated with gibberellic acid (GA3) and abscisic acid (ABA) (0.1 and 1.0 mmol.m-3) and kept at 28oC ± 2 in BOD. The analysis of germinated seeds was carried out over five days and the emergence of the axis (radicle) was the parameter used to recognize the seed germination. The results showed that the seed coat inhibits its germination and seeds submitted to extended storage period (sixteen months) although had conserved its moisture and viability, showed low germination percentage and it did not respond to GA3 treatment, whereas seeds stored for five month showed more sensitive to ABA than to GA3 treatment.
