Abstract

Full fat soybean (Glycine max) is not used by producers of extruded feed for aquaculture. This study investigated the effect of extrusion variables on the physical characteristics of the feed with increasing replacement levels of soybean meal for full fat soybean: 0%, 48% and 100%. Eleven treatments were set up for each replacement level, using a twin-screw extruder (Werner & Pfleiderer ZSK-30), according to a 2x2x2 factorial design with more three replications of the central point. The independent variables were extrusion temperature, feeding rate and moisture. The surface-response method was used to evaluate the combined effect of the independent variables on the dependent variables. Treatments means were subject to multiple regression analysis to propose first order models. Variance analysis was used to test the adequacy of the models. Feed buoyancy and lixiviation decreased with reduction in temperature, increase in moisture and the replacement level of soybean meal with full fat soybean. The hardness of feeds increased only with the increase in moisture and replacement level.
