DISTRIBUTION OF IMPREGNATIONS AND BIRTHS, SEX RATE AND INTERVAL BETWEEN CALF BIRTHS OF A POLLED GIR HERD IN THE GOIÁS STATE
Abstract
The objective of this study was to identify the reproductive behavior of a herd of Polled Gir Cattle put in open pasture, at the Tapete Verde Ranch in Carmo do Rio Verde County in the state of Goiás. Four hundred and eighty-eight (488) items regarding calving in the Polled Gir cows were studied from 1973 to 1976. It was observed that the highest number of births occurred from July to October, with the peak in August. Birth distribution, as well as impregnations during this period, showed results similar to those cited by CARNEIRO and Cols., TABARELLI NETO et alii., JOCHLE, HUDDER and McCAMLEY, and GUSMÃO. The lowest birth rate occurred during the months of November and December because the bulls were removed from the herd in the months of January. A large percentage of male calves was born in all three years, although the proportion in relation to female calves was statistically significant only in 1974. The results of 192 items observed showed that the medium interval between births was 16.82 +/- 4.82 months.
