Abstract

Most lettuce varieties develop only small plants, during the hot and rainy season, in Goiânia. The butter head group, under local conditions, does not produce a typical head and shows early bolting. In order to identify the best varieties, concerning growing performance and the local consumer’s preference, it was made a competition testing the following varieties: Babá, White Boston, Cazard, Grand Rápids, Great Lakes, Miracle Voorburg and Romaine lettuce (Cos). It was determined the weight of the edible part of the plant, earliness, head formation and commercial acceptance. Great Lakes ranked best regarding head formation and weight, followed by Cazard which seems the most promising because of its butter head appearance.
