Abstract

The objective of this paper was to measure and analyze beef cattle basis values and basis risk for the State of Goiás, Brazil. The Goiás State Federation of Agriculture and Livestock (Faeg) series of spot prices for beef cattle and the series of future prices in the Brazilian Mercantile & Futures Exchange (BM&F), from the Center for Advanced Studies in Applied Economics (Cepea), at the “Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture (ESALQ) of the University of São Paulo, were used in the study. The mensuration of the basis and of the basis risk allowed the analysis of the behavior of the beef cattle spot prices for the State of Goiás and the future prices of the commodity in the BM&F. It was noticed a significant difference between the series, during the researched period. That difference of prices is more evident between December and May, period defined as harvest. However, between harvest periods, from June to November, prices present a closer proximity. It was concluded that the statistical parameters used are essential for producers decision making in the commercialization of beef cattle in the State of Goiás.
