Abstract

An attack of Pachymerus nucleorum Fabr., 1792 (BruchidaeColeoptera) upon Syagrus oleraceae Mart. (Palmae) coconuts was observed in 73 counties of Goiás, Brazil. From August 1977 to March 1978, 2,132 coconuts were collected, 60.75% of which were infested with the insect, of these, 1,295 were infested and 381 had been abandoned by the insect. In the remaining coconuts 635 larvas, 42 prepupas, 213 pupas and 24 adults were found. Laboratory work showed the following death rates: larvas, 27.93%, prepupas and pupas, 0.90%; adults 5.51%. The total death rate was 33. 12%. In highly infested areas, there are many palms used for commercial purposes, and the same crop is planted over and over again.
