Abstract

This article stems from reflections on the need for education for racial equality to achieve the effective realization of human rights in societies marked by colonialism, which is responsible for the racial hierarchy that generates inequalities and hinders respect for human dignity. These reflections were enriched by interactions established during the Winter School Extension Course - Education in Human Rights, held in 2021, whose objective was to promote training in Human Rights. The text is organized into two sections. The first discusses education as a human right to be guaranteed and also covers human rights education as a fundamental part of the set of rights and humanizing values achieved through the recognition, realization, and universalization of human dignity. The second section contains discussions on addressing structural racism to establish equality in rights, opportunities, and treatment, recognizing differences, respecting human dignity, and holding the state accountable. The educational role of the black movement is highlighted as a central agent in the mobilization, articulation, and systematization of emancipatory knowledge produced by the black population in Brazil.
