Resumo

A partir da consideração de alguns momentos da experiência intelectual do antropólogo norte-americano Irving Goldman (1911-2002) com comunidades kubeo do rio Cuduiari, na Amazônia colombiana, este artigo propõe delinear alguns dos entendimentos então compartilhados pela geração de antropólogos contemporâneos de Goldman a respeito da dita “hierarquia” dos povos do noroeste amazônico. Ao mesmo tempo, mostra como essas imagens operam com pressupostos herdados desde pelo menos as formulações do “Handbook of South American Indians” (1948) acerca dos povos ameríndios das terras baixas sul-americanas.
