What changed in my life? Considerations from people who suffered acute myocardial infarction

When suffering an acute myocardial infarction (AMI), people must modify their lifestyle, causing repercussions on daily life and quality of life. This research aimed to identify changes that occurred in the lifestyle of elderly people that suffered AMI and how they dealt with the situation. This descriptive study with a qualitative scope was undertaken, including eleven individuals from the urban environment in a northwestern city of Rio Grande do Sul state. Data collection was from October to November of 2009, using open interviews. Data were analyzed according to the precepts of content analysis. An analytical category emerged: re-knowing changes in lifestyle of individuals who have suffered AMI and coping, divided into three sub-categories. The results can be used by students and health professionals, undertake reflections and attitudes towards health promotion, prevention of recurrence of AMI, and qualify nursing assistance.
