Abstract

Nowadays accidents involving children are being a relevant cause of morbimortality. Physical injuries are responsible for 98 % of death in developing countries. The study had as aim identifying the kinds of accidents involving zero to twelve-year-old children assisted by Integrated Study of Trauma and Emergency Reception (SIATE) from Cascavel. The descriptive study was developed through a survey of SIATE's files, concerned to the children attendances made in 2004. As a result, 379 attendances involving children were obtained. The main causes were traffic accidents (63,6%) and falls (20,3%), involving boys (63,6%), from this amount 33% were 10 to 12 year-old children, traffic collision (31,1%) and running over (18,2%) were the most frequent ones among traffic accidents. Concerned to domestic accidents, there were attendances involving injuries due to natural disasters, falls of washing tanks, burns, drowning, poisoning and events involving animals such as, horses and bees. Also, attendances due to aggression, rape and gunshot wounds were registered. The conclusion was that, children have been suffering several injuries caused by traffic and domestic accidents as well as physical and sexual violence. There is the necessity of intensifying strategies concerned to prevention of traffic accidents.
