Abstract

Objective: to assess the stress perceived by nursing students in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic and identify associated factors. Methods: cross-sectional study involving undergraduate nursing students from a university in the state of Rio de Janeiro. Data collection was carried out online, from October to November 2020, using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS), in the version adapted for use in Brazil. Fisher’s Exact test and Student’s t test were used, with p-value < 0.05. Results: 146 nursing students participated. The mean perceived stress score was 22.3 (SD ± 5.3), with a higher score for males (p = 0.001). The most prevalent stressors were related to the University and studies; to Isolation and social distancing, and to emotional aspects. There was an association between studying up to the fifth period and stressors related to the university and studies (p = 0.020) and information about COVID-19 (p = 0.003). Stressors related to financial factors were associated with a perceived decrease in income (p = 0.000). Conclusion: the perceived stress of students in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic was moderate, with greater intensity in males, and stressors were associated with the stage of the course until the fifth period and a decrease in income.
