Abstract

Abstract - This study discusses autonomy in daily activities of a group of aged people who live in a low-income community. The main objective of this study is to evaluate the autonomy levels in daily activities concerning instrumental, affective, social, physical and spiritual aspects, including the decision-making skill in daily routine. It is an exploratory study and a quantitative analysis with qualitative aspects. The research was developed in an area of the Centro de Desenvolvimento Familiar, assistance unit in primary attention of the Universidade Federal do Ceará, linked to the Pró-Reitoria de Extensão. Autonomy is a fundamental element for maintaining the health of the aged and that is one of the objectives of the Política Nacional do Idoso (PNI). We may conclude that most of the interviewed people, even those who suffer from chronic-degenerative illnesses, are autonomous and able to accomplish their daily activities. The family has an important role in maintaining their autonomy and decision-making skill.  Key-words: The Aged, Autonomy, Family, Daily Activity;
