Abstract

Compared to other countries, Brazil has the highest rates in births by caesarean section. This fact is not different in Maringá, a town in the northern region of the state of Paraná, Brazil. Delivery institutionalization brought the medication of the female body and a frequency increase in births by caesarean section. Our quantitative and exploratory research. The purpose of this study was to analyze the rate of caesarean sections in a Hospital School. Method: Data, obtained from official medical records on pregnant women that underwent caesarean section during the years 2001-2003. It was possible to identify that in last three years a 45.3% rate in caesarean sections. Although this medical service attends to high risk pregnant females, the percentage rate of caesarean sections was above the number justified and such a practice ought to be revised.
