Abstract

ABSTRACT: Little is known with respect to women's views concerning their gynecological exams. In this study, there was an attempt to detect the meanings that 30 women attributed to such exam as well as the social and personal influences acting upon the elaboration of that meaning. The data obtained by means of interviews, which were analyzed by symbolic interactionism, are represented in the process of the "gynecological exam avoidance" and other factors that can reinforce it. The creation of places for information/reflection concerning one's body and sexuality for adult women, children and adolescents is suggested. Key words: Gynecological exam, mental health, nursing, woman, symbolic interactionism.
