The family health strategy has gained nationwide notoriety, however some obstacles denotes to be a pervious field to relevant studies and discussions. For that reason we had as object of study to characterize the nurse's practice in this strategy at the county of Vitória/ES. The methodological way elected was the study of the case, based on quantitative evidence, being the data treated from distribution of simple frequency, from a form that was applied, between August and November, 2006. Thirty-four voluntary nurses participated as subjects in this research, as members of the health family team, after the consent of this study which has been attending the 196/96 National Health Council Resolution. The results showed that the nurses' practice is directed according to pre-established actions by the Ministry of Health and Care and the Health Office of the county. The data show that the preconceived actions are minimally performed by the nurses, however, it seems that this performance is not making enough impact concerning the prevention of diseases and in health improvement because they are in great part engaged to cure and to administrative actions. Imprint limitations, organizational, structural and conceptual were mentioned as the main factors that obstruct the ideal development of the nursing practice.
