Investigation of risk for attempt of suicide in hospital of João Pessoa – PB

It is a descriptive-documentary research, with quantitative approach that aimed to characterize the profile of the people who tried the suicide, attended in the Hospital of Emergency and Trauma in João Pessoa / PB. The sample was constituted of 87 newsletters of entrance and records of patients with diagnoses of attempt of suicide, between January and December 2005. A form with information about age, sex and methods used for the attempt of suicide was used. It was highlighted that the age with higher occurrence was between 15 and 34 years old (66,6%) for both sexes. The women correspond to 53% and the men represent 47% of the cases. The methods most used by the men were: poisoning (21,4%), shining weapon (19%), medicine ingestion (19%), Jumping from a height (4,3%). It is highlighted the need of detecting the level of danger of the suicide intention and identify the risk behaviors, aiming to adopt preventive actions against new attempts.
