ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to investigate the occurrence of domestic violence among women followed at a family health unit in the municipality of João Pessoa (Pernambuco, Brazil). This quantitative study was performed with a population of 860 women. The sample consisted of 86 women, who were randomly surveyed, using, at first, inclusion criteria. Data analysis was performed using descriptive and inferential statistics, applying the Chi-Square Test (X2). It was verified that 63% of the interviewees informed having suffered domestic violence. As for the assailants, 39% were the women’s own partner. Regarding the types of violence, 46% were psychological. In terms of the relationship between variables, statistical significance was found for women’s educational level with p<0.05. Results show there is a need for health care services to establish interdisciplinary care as a way to meet the needs of women victims of domestic violence and promote accessibility to protection services.
