The objectives of this study were to assess the perceptions of recyclable material collectors regarding their quality of life, identify the sociodemographic variables that potentially affect their quality of life, and compare the results with a similar study. This cross-sectional, observational study used the World Health Organization Quality of Life – 100 Questionnaire with 96 collectors residing in a city in Minas Gerais in 2010. Results showed that the psychological, social relations and environmental domains had the lowest scores. Being homeless, young, with a higher education level and without a partner contributed to the lowest scores in the global assessment of the collectors’ quality of life. A similarity was observed between the present study results and that of a study performed with university workers, with different scores for social relations and environmental domains. In conclusion, results provide the underpinning data to strengthen public policies aimed at the collectors of recyclable material.
