The perception of men with hypertension or diabetes about the care received in a Health Basic Unit

This qualitative study aimed to identify the perception of men about the program to control hypertension and diabetes mellitus in which they are registered. The investigation occurred with 14 men assigned to the coverage area of a team from the Family Health Program in the municipality of Parnamirim-RN, Brazil. Data were collected during May and July 2010 through semi-structured interview. The statements were analyzed by Content Analysis, according to Bardin. The results revealed positive opinions about this program especially because of the care provided by professionals and the provision of free drugs. There was also interviewed in the absence of educational activities in groups for people with hypertension and diabetes. It was noted the need to promote preventive actions by the male population when it seeks the service in order to awaken it to self-care practices.
