The objective was to analyze the experience of the students using the field diary as a teaching strategy and tool to analyze the organization of nursing work. The supervised training was conducted with eight students in an outpatient clinic located in Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil during eight days. According the reports , we verified that the students analyzed the consequences of the functional method, the leadership style of the nursing coordinator, and ethical issues related to care assistance. The diary enabled the students to make a connection between theory and practice, evidencing difficulties faced in the daily routine of health services and confronting them with knowledge academically produced.
