The objective of this study conducted in São Carlos/SP in 2009 was to evaluate the family functionality of the elderly with cognitive impairments, enrolled in Family Health Units, living at different contexts of social vulnerability. The family functionality was evaluated using the Family APGAR instrument during home interview (n = 88). The results showed that most elderly (97% of men and 74% of women) had pointed good family functionality. There was a predominance of good family functionality in all age groups. 78% of the poor ones and 86% of the non-poor pointed good family functionality. There was not significant correlation between age, sex, different groups of social vulnerability and the Family APGAR of elderly participants (p > 0.05). The family functioning should be evaluated in order to improve care for the elderly at home and care planning, directing actions to families’ reality.
