Abstract

This article aims to conduct a sociological analysis of the doctor-patient relationship in the Argentine market for cosmetic surgery, seeking to show how plastic surgeons attract and manage the aesthetic demands of candidates. The study is based on in-depth interviews conducted with plastic surgeons and patients in 2018-2019 and on the analysis of some medical publications. The first part examines the centrality of the
construction of recommendation networks in the consolidation of the medical careers, whose nourishment depends on obtaining satisfactory results. In the second section, it identifies the criteria used by medical professionals to distinguish “good” from “bad” candidates. In closing, it investigates the practices deployed in the consultation to reach a consensus on the result of breast augmentation surgeries, showing that the participation of patients is a key instance in the imposition of expert authority.
